Steps to Finding and Getting a Mentor to Grow Your Career

No matter where you are in your life, there is always going to be someone out there who has achieved more. If you look in the right places, you can find people who want to help others succeed like they have. I recently reached out to someone who had just taken a dream job at a dream company. I wanted to see if she would take me up on an offer to grab a coffee sometime to talk about how she applied and got this amazing opportunity.

Much to my surprise, she took me up on that offer and we’re meeting in a couple of weeks. Reaching out to someone can be intimidating, but I was brought up with a “If you don’t ask, you’ll never receive” mentality. The worse thing they would do is ignore my request or tell me no. Finding a mentor can change your life. Take these five steps to find the right mentor for you.

1) Decide on Your Goals
Knowing where you want to go with your career is the first step in knowing who to reach out to. What kind of company do you want to work for? Is their involvement in the community important to you? What kind of lifestyle do you want to be able to afford? Set aside some time to write down some ideal numbers, list of benefits you want to have, and job description you would enjoy. These goals will give you a starting point when it comes time to find a mentor.

2) Follow People on Social Media
We are extremely lucky to have access to social media. Follow your favorite companies (and people within those companies) on Twitter. Participate in the conversation so they become familiar with your name before you even send out an email.

3) Reach Out in a Genuine Manner
People respond to authentic communication. Don’t spam their inbox with emails that are not personalized. If you’ve interacted with them on Twitter, you can find something that you can complement and share in your email.

4) Thank Them In Advance
Thank you can still go a long way. Thanking them for even considering your request shows you are grateful for the time you will be taking from them. Truthfully, they could be spending time doing hundreds of other things instead of replying to your email.

5) Respond Quickly & Specifically
When they reply to your initial request, reply to them with 24 hours – sooner if possible. Someone who is slow to reply shows that they might not be wholly invested in the relationship that could form.

If you follow these steps, you’ll likely find a great mentor in no time and be on your way to a better career.
